Scope of the role

This newly created challenging role targets two absolutely key areas for MUS and MPF&S; the reduction of vehicle accidents and further reductions in vehicle emissions are core objectives which the company are determined to achieve. Reduced vehicle emissions are delivered through reductions in fuel consumption and better fuel consumption is achieved through smoother, safer driving. Research (and MPF&S own trials) confirm the saving on fuel through better driving across the MUS fleet could be as high as 15%. The Road Safety and Green Fleet Manager has a clear brief; reduce vehicle accidents and reduce fuel consumption across the MUS/MPF&S fleet.

Working as an integral part of the new Fleet Services management team within the Plant & Fleet Services division, the appointee will be a 'hands on' manager helping define the strategy and then deliver significant reductions in vehicle accidents and vehicle fuel consumption. A UK wide role working with every MUS contract in the UK at senior management level, to guide and lead each MUS contract to big improvements in vehicle accident rates and fuel consumption.

The Road Safety and Green Fleet Manager must deliver leadership in reducing fuel consumption and vehicle accidents by using leading and lagging risk indicators; defining plans of action to address areas of risk and implement by working with MUS contract management. Working with key stakeholders across the MPF&S / MUS business, as well as key external suppliers is a core requirement of the role. MUS/MPF&S are multiple Green Fleet award winners and the successful candidate will build on this success to drive further improvements in vehicle fuel consumption. The vehicle accident level has plateaud at too high a level despite the deployment of driver trainers across the MUS business. The ability to deliver new successful strategies to significantly improve the accident rate is a key requirement.

The Fleet Services department has stiff financial targets to meet and the performance of the £2.2 million vehicle insurance fund is key to the department's success. The Road Safety and Green Fleet manager has a key part to play in achieving these targets through the reduction of vehicle accidents which directly affect these costs. Of even greater importance is the MUS philosophy on safety and commitment to not harming other people and property. The 'moral' need to reduce vehicle accidents is the number one priority, any cost saving is a very valuable but secondary objective.

The Role

  • Vehicle Accident Prevention (Strategy); complete responsibility for the accident prevention program and strategy (in conjunction with Head of Fleet services). This includes the establishment of a Road Safety working group with key senior Directors and the MUS Health and Safety department.
